Abstract

Kapok fiber has not yet been optimally utilized, even though it contains a high amount of cellulose that can potentially be used as an alternative raw material for the production of oxalic acid. This study aims to synthesize oxalic acid from kapok fiber by examining the effect of hydrolysis temperature and the number of moles of cellulose on the yield of oxalic acid. In the initial stage, cleaned kapok fibers were dried and weighed according to the desired cellulose mole ratio. The fibers then underwent alkaline hydrolysis using NaOH solution. The resulting filtrate was reacted with CaCl₂, and the precipitate obtained was acidified with H₂SO₄ to form oxalic acid precipitate. The filtrate was then heated and cooled to produce oxalic acid crystals, which were analyzed using permanganometric titration, pH measurement, melting point determination, and FTIR spectroscopy. Variations in cellulose mole ratios used were 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1 mol, with hydrolysis temperatures of 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90°C, respectively. The formation of oxalic acid was influenced by both the cellulose mole ratio and the hydrolysis temperature. The highest oxalic acid yield, 17.45%, was obtained at 1 mol cellulose and a hydrolysis temperature of 70°C. The resulting oxalic acid exhibited a pH range of 1.51–2.10, a melting point of 101.5°C, and characteristic FTIR absorption peaks corresponding to O–H (3406.29 cm⁻¹), C=O (1687.71 cm⁻¹), C–O (1132.21 cm⁻¹), and C–H (669.30 cm⁻¹) functional groups. Keywords: oxalic acid, alkaline hydrolysis, cellulose, kapok fiber
