Abstract

Green mussel shells are rich in calcium oxide and can be utilized as a raw material to synthesize β-Tricalcium Phosphate (β-TCP), a bioceramic widely used in bone, dental, and cement applications. In this study, β-TCP was synthesized via the hydrothermal method by reacting calcium hydroxide with phosphoric acid. The effects of sintering temperature (780–900°C) and pH (6–10) on crystallinity and yield were investigated. XRD analysis was performed to evaluate the crystallinity of the product. The sintering temperatures applied remained below the phase transition point of α-TCP (≥1125°C), indicating that the dominant phase formed was β-TCP. The highest yield was obtained at 840°C and pH 8 (59.37%), while the highest crystallinity, 95.78%, was achieved at 900°C and pH 8. These findings confirm the successful synthesis of highly crystalline β-TCP from biogenic waste using a simple hydrothermal approach, meeting ISO 13175-3:2012 standards for biomedical calcium phosphate materials.
