Abstract

The crude oil processing at the PPSDM Migas Cepu refinery utilizes the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) process. This CDU process operates at high temperatures, requiring various supporting equipment. One of the key components used to increase the crude oil temperature before entering the evaporator is the furnace. At PPSDM Migas Cepu, there are six furnaces in total; however, only two Furnace-01 and Furnace-03 are actively used in operation. The operating furnaces are box-type furnaces with a horizontal firing arrangement. The production process of pertasol and diesel fuel at the PPSDM Migas Cepu refinery runs continuously, meaning that the equipment operates 24 hours a day. Continuous production can affect the furnace’s performance, making it necessary to evaluate its efficiency to determine its operational effectiveness. This study aims to evaluate the performance of Furnace-01 at the PPSDM Migas Cepu refinery based on several parameters. The evaluation method involved collecting and processing both field data and literature data. Based on the calculation results, the total heat input to Furnace-01 was 228,056,288.545 Btu/hr, while the total heat output was 32,791,804.725 Btu/hr. The efficiency of Furnace-01 was calculated to be 86.35%, which indicates that the furnace is still operating optimally, as furnaces are considered efficient when their efficiency exceeds 70%. Therefore, it can be concluded that Furnace-01 is still in good operating condition, provided that regular maintenance is carried out to maintain its performance and ensure reliable operation.
