Abstract
The Magnesium Oxide (MgO) plant utilizing dolomite and bittern through the Dow Chemical process is designed to meet domestic demand and reduce import dependency in Indonesia. The proposed plant will be located in the JIIPE Industrial Area, Gresik, East Java, with a production capacity of 70,000 tons per year and a continuous operation system for 330 days annually. Dolomite supplied by PT Saribumi Sidayu and bittern from PT Unichem Candi Indonesia serve as the main raw materials. The production process involves dolomite hydration, followed by the dolomite–bittern reaction to produce magnesium hydroxide, which is subsequently dehydrated at 400°C to obtain high-purity magnesium oxide. The economic feasibility analysis shows a Return on Investment (ROI) before tax of 35%, an ROI after tax of 26.25%, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 18.86%, a Payback Period of 3 years and 9 months, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 30.10%. Based on the technical and economic evaluations, it can be concluded that the magnesium oxide plant using dolomite and bittern through the Dow Chemical process is both technically and economically feasible to be established in Indonesia.
