Abstract
The increasing demand for energy has encouraged the development of environmentally friendly alternative fuels, one of which is ethanol. However, ethanol produced from fermentation still contains water and must be purified before use. This study aims to purify ethanol using an adsorption process with silica gel and to determine the effect of variations in adsorbent weight and flow rate on the ethanol concentration obtained. The adsorption process was carried out using 96% ethanol passed through a silica gel column at a temperature of approximately 78°C. The flow rate was varied from 0.1 to 0.5 ml/s, and the silica gel weight was varied from 20 to 60 grams. The ethanol concentration was analyzed using an alcoholmeter and Gas Chromatography (GC), and process optimization was performed using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The results showed that the highest ethanol concentration of 99.8% was obtained at a flow rate of 0.1 ml/s and a silica gel weight of 60 grams. GC analysis indicated an ethanol concentration of 98% under the same conditions. RSM optimization resulted in the optimum condition at a flow rate of 0.103 ml/s and a silica gel weight of 59.818 grams, producing 99.804% ethanol. These results demonstrate that silica gel is an effective adsorbent for ethanol purification, achieving fuel-grade ethanol quality.
