Abstract

Water availability for plants, particularly in dryland areas, remains a problem, particularly recently due to the impact of global climate change on the hydrological cycle. Water availability in a given area varies across land uses. This study assessed soil water retention capacity across four land uses (upland field, mixed garden, paddy field, shrubland) in Inceptisol of Beji District, Indonesia. The soil properties analyzed include organic matter, texture, bulk density, porosity, permeability, and water retention at pF 2.54 and 4.2. Results indicate that available water is low (<10%) in all land uses, with mixed gardens showing the highest retention due to higher organic matter and porosity. Differences in land use at the study sites did not significantly impact soil water availability. Organic matter, bulk density, bulk density, and total porosity significantly influenced the amount of available water. The combination of all parameters contributed 63% to the available water. These findings also highlight the potential role of mixed gardens in improving water availability for sustainable land management in tropical regions.
