Abstract
The Acetic Acid Plant with a production capacity of 70,000 tons per year is planned to be established in Guntung, North Bontang District, Bontang City, East Kalimantan. This factory will operate continuously for 24 hours a day and 330 days a year. The main product produced is acetic acid (CH₃COOH) with 99% purity, which has wide applications in the chemical industry, such as a raw material for the production of vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), purified terephthalic acid (PTA), cellulose acetate, and is also used in the food, textile, and pharmaceutical industries. The production process uses the methanol carbonylation method with the Monsanto process, which has advantages such as lower operating temperature and pressure, more efficient energy consumption, and high reaction conversion and selectivity. The main raw materials used are methanol (CH₃OH), carbon monoxide (CO), with a rhodium catalyst and methyl iodide (CH₃I) promoter. Methanol is obtained from PT Kaltim Methanol Industri in Bontang, while carbon monoxide is supplied from PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur and the nearest gas industrial network. The process flow begins with the preparation of raw materials, which are pumped, heated, and mixed before entering the fixed-bed reactor. Inside the reactor, methanol reacts with carbon monoxide under operating conditions of 180 °C and 30 atm to produce acetic acid. The product output is then sent to a flash drum to separate unreacted gasses from the liquid phase. Next, the liquid is sent to a distillation column to purify the acetic acid to 99% purity, while the light fraction is recycled back to the reactor. The establishment of this plant is technically and economically feasible, given the high domestic market demand and the potential to reduce import dependence. This acetic acid plant is expected to strengthen the independence of the national chemical industry, support sustainable development, and create new job opportunities in the Bontang industrial area.
