Abstract

The growing demand for renewable energy has intensified interest in biomass-based biofuels. Tobacco waste, particularly tobacco stalks, remains underutilized despite Indonesia being one of the largest tobacco producers. This study aims to optimize the quality of bio-oil derived from tobacco waste pyrolysis by reducing its acid number through adsorption using activated carbon. The high acidity of bio-oil negatively affects its stability, corrosivity, and energy efficiency, limiting its direct application as a fuel. The experimental process involved pyrolysis at 400°C, followed by adsorption with activated carbon at varying masses and contact times. Results indicated that increasing adsorbent mass and prolonging contact time significantly reduced the acid number. The lowest acid number, 0.6271 mgKOH/g, was obtained using 15 g of activated carbon after 150 minutes of adsorption. Further optimization using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) extended the adsorption time to 180 minutes, successfully reducing the acid number to 0.36486 mgKOH/g, meeting the Indonesian National Standard for biofuels. Additional characterization, including proximate analysis and flash point measurements, confirmed improvements in fuel properties. These findings underscore the effectiveness of activated carbon adsorption as a cost-efficient and scalable method for upgrading bio-oil quality, promoting its practical use in renewable energy applications.
