Abstract
Potassium carbonate has numerous industrial uses, including as a raw material for glass production, as a chemical additive, as a dye, as an adsorbent in the gas industry, and as a source of potassium in the fertilizer industry. The production process employed in this potassium carbonate plant is carbonation. The potassium carbonate production process begins by dissolving potassium hydroxide in process water to form a potassium hydroxide solution. This solution is then reacted with CO2 gas in a bubble column reactor at a pressure of 0.2 atm and a temperature of 85°C to produce potassium carbonate and water. During this process, 70% of the water is evaporated, resulting in the potassium carbonate solids exiting the reactor as a slurry, which is separated from the remaining solution using a rotary drum filter. The potassium carbonate is dried in a rotary dryer and then fed to a ball mill to be standardized in size before being packaged and distributed.
