Abstract
The design of an acrolein plant from glycerol feedstock using the dehydration process is planned with a production capacity of 40,000 tons/year to meet the growing domestic demand, which is currently fulfilled entirely through imports. The production process utilizes 99.7% glycerol mixed with water, vaporized up to 300°C, and reacted in a fixed-bed multitube reactor with 98.5% conversion, producing acrolein along with acetol and water as by-products, which are further purified through distillation to achieve ±95.5% purity. Economic analysis indicates a Total Capital Investment of IDR 914.08 billion with an annual production cost of IDR 1.49 trillion and sales revenue of IDR 2 trillion, resulting in a post-tax ROI of 27.74%, IRR of 24%, BEP of 26.20%, and a payback period of 2 years and 11 months. Based on these results, establishing an acrolein plant in Medang Kampai Industrial Area, Dumai City, is considered technically and economically feasible as well as strategic to reduce import dependence and strengthen the self-reliance of Indonesia’s chemical industry.
