Abstract

This study investigates the formation of magnesium phosphate from bittern, a by-product of salt production that contains high concentrations of magnesium ions. The process was carried out through precipitation by adding sodium phosphate as the phosphate source. The objectives of this research were to optimize the reaction conditions, determine the effect of sodium phosphate dosage, and evaluate the purity of the magnesium phosphate obtained. The experimental results showed that the addition of sodium phosphate effectively facilitated the precipitation of magnesium ions in the form of magnesium phosphate. Key parameters such as pH, reaction time, and reagent ratio were found to significantly influence the yield and quality of the product. Characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the formation of crystalline magnesium phosphate compounds, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a homogeneous morphology of the precipitate. The findings suggest that bittern can be utilized as a sustainable raw material for magnesium-based products, reducing waste from salt industries while providing value-added chemical compounds. This research highlights the potential of integrating waste valorization with chemical synthesis to support circular economy practices.
