Abstract
The design of an Acetic Acid Plant with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year is proposed to be established in Guntung, Bontang Utara, East Kalimantan, operating continuously for 24 hours per day and 330 days per year. The production process applies the Monsanto methanol carbonylation method, which offers advantages of lower operating conditions, higher energy efficiency, and excellent conversion and selectivity, using methanol and carbon monoxide as raw materials with rhodium catalyst and methyl iodide promoter. The process involves raw material preparation, reaction in a fixed bed reactor at 180 °C and 30 atm, followed by separation in a flash drum and purification through distillation to obtain 99% pure acetic acid. Considering the high domestic demand and potential to reduce imports, the plant is technically and economically feasible, with expectations to strengthen the national chemical industry, support sustainable development, and create new employment opportunities in the Bontang industrial area.
