Abstract

Spodoptera litura is a major pest of various agricultural commodities that can significantly reduce productivity. Excessive chemical control has negative impacts on the environment and health, thus environmentally friendly alternatives are needed. Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV) is known to be effective as a biological control agent. This study aimed to explore the presence of S. litura NPV (Sl-NPV) in Pamekasan Regency, to identify its morphology and molecular characteristics, and to assess its pathogenicity. Naturally infected S. litura larvae were collected from several locations. Molecular analysis was conducted using PCR with specific primers. The results showed that Sl-NPV was found in Sana Tengah Village, Pamekasan Regency. Pathogenicity tests indicated that the virus was able to infect healthy larvae and produce NPV infection symptoms. PCR produced a 717 bp fragment consistent with the target, confirming the virus identity. These findings indicate that Sl-NPV from Pamekasan has high potential as an effective and sustainable biological control agent, and can serve as a basis for the development of virus-based biopesticides.
