Abstract

A propylene glycol plant using propylene oxide and water using a propylene oxide hydration process using sulfuric acid as a catalyst with a production capacity of 38,000 tons/year is planned to be established in the Bungah area, Gresik Regency, East Java. The propylene glycol manufacturing process uses propylene oxide (produced from the reaction between 99% propylene and 32% hydrogen peroxide), 1% sulfuric acid catalyst, 48% sodium hydroxide, and water. Propylene glycol is produced through a hydration process, where the propylene oxide and sulfuric acid catalyst are contacted with water to form propylene glycol. After the reaction, the propylene glycol is separated from the other compounds to achieve a purity of 99.96%.
