Abstract
A sodium benzoate plant will be established at the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE) in Gresik. The main raw materials are benzoic acid (C₇H₆O₂) and sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃). Supporting materials include activated carbon, which is used for product bleaching. The production process of sodium benzoate consists of three stages. First, the raw material preparation stage, where sodium carbonate is dissolved to a concentration of 20%. The second stage is the neutralization process, where benzoic acid is reacted with sodium carbonate to form sodium benzoate with a conversion rate of 99%, followed by the addition of activated carbon for bleaching. The third stage is product purification, where sodium benzoate is separated from the activated carbon using a rotary drum vacuum filter. This is followed by reducing the water content in an evaporator, after which the solution is passed through a crystallizer to form sodium benzoate crystals, which are then separated from the mother liquor in a centrifuge. The product from the centrifuge is then dried using a rotary dryer and cooled using a cooling conveyor, before being sized uniformly with a ball mill. Sodium benzoate is then temporarily stored in a silo before packaging and storage in the warehouse.
