Abstract
Income inequality is a critical issue in regional economic development, including in the Mataraman region of East Java Province, which is characterized by diverse socio-economic and geographic conditions. This study aims to analyze the influence of socio-economic variables on income inequality across regencies within the region. The independent variables used include education, health, gross regional domestic product (GRDP) per capita, and the open unemployment rate. A quantitative approach was employed using panel data regression with the fixed effect model, based on annual data from 2019 to 2023. The results show that average years of schooling (AYS) has a positive and significant effect on income inequality, life expectancy (LE) has a negative and significant effect, GRDP per capita has a negative but statistically insignificant effect, and the open unemployment rate (OUR) has a negative and significant effect. These findings indicate that income inequality in the Mataraman region is more influenced by the distribution of access to education, health services, and the labor market rather than by aggregate economic growth alone. Therefore, an inclusive and equitable development approach across regions is essential to reduce income disparities and promote balanced regional growth.
