Abstract

n the digital era, K-Pop has reshaped fan-idol relationships through platforms like Weverse. This study explores parasocial interactions between the boy group SEVENTEEN and their fans, CARAT, on Weverse. It aims to examine how emotional and psychological attachments form and how platform features reinforce one-sided relationships that feel personal. Using Horton and Wohl’s (1956) Parasocial Interaction theory, the study analyzes cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews and documentation of fan interactions on Weverse. The findings show that fans initially engage through visual content, then develop a deeper emotional bond as they understand the idols' personalities. Fans experience strong emotional attachment, actively comment, join live streams, and purchase merchandise. Weverse functions as a safe emotional space and fosters community among fans. It also shapes fan behavior, shifting expressions of admiration into active digital engagement. The platform’s structure, including exclusive content and paid memberships, commodifies interactions and intensifies fan loyalty. Parasocial interactions are reinforced across cognitive, emotional, and behavioral levels, making Weverse both a communication tool and a strategic media product.
