Abstract

Cassava stems, a substantial agricultural byproduct in Indonesia, are largely underutilized. This research investigates their conversion into biochar, a valuable material recognized for its potential in enhancing soil quality and providing environmental benefits. The methodology involved cleaning, cutting, and drying cassava stems, followed by a controlled pyrolysis process within a reactor. The resulting biochar's quality was subsequently characterized by its carbon, ash, moisture, and volatile matter content. Experimental results indicate that optimal biochar characteristics were achieved under pyrolysis conditions of 400˚C for 75 minutes. This yielded a biochar with a carbon content of 72.43%, an ash content of 8.86%, a moisture content of 1.65%, and a volatile matter content of 17.07%. This study demonstrates a viable approach for transforming agricultural waste into a beneficial resource, contributing to sustainable waste management and soil improvement strategies.
