Abstract

Areca nut (Areca catechu L.) is a plant that has many benefits, especially in its fruit, but areca nut skin is only considered as waste. Areca nut skin has a relatively high cellulose content which can be used, one of which is in the manufacture of cellulose acetate. This study aims to obtain cellulose acetate from areca nut skin and find the best conditions based on variations in acetylation time and volume of glacial acetic acid. The process of making cellulose into cellulose acetate is carried out in 2 stages, where the first stage is cellulose isolation and the second stage is acetylation. The acetylation process is carried out by reacting cellulose made from areca nut skin and glacial acetic acid in a beaker glass using a stirrer. The process consists of several stages. The first stage is the manufacture of cellulose which is then purified. The second stage is to dissolve cellulose into phosphoric acid and acetylate cellulose with glacial acetic acid and the product recovery stage by filtration and drying. In the study, the effect of acetylation time of 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes and 25 minutes will be studied with the provision of glacial acetic acid volume of 98% of 20 ml, 40 ml, 60 ml, 80 ml and 100 ml on the acetyl content of cellulose acetate. From the results of this study, the largest acetyl content was 28.09% at acetylation time of 15 minutes with the provision of glacial acetic acid volume of 60 ml.
