Abstract
This report presents the results of a one-month internship at PT Energi Agro Nusantara, a subsidiary of PTPN X engaged in the production of bioethanol and biogas using molasses as the primary raw material. The internship aimed to bridge theoretical knowledge from chemical engineering studies with real-world industrial practices. A key technical issue identified during the internship was the high concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in biogas, which poses serious risks such as corrosion to equipment, reduced energy efficiency, and environmental hazards. To address this, a detailed study and design of an H₂S absorption column using a sieve tray configuration were conducted. The design process included mass transfer analysis, evaluation of different absorber types, and tray efficiency calculations using relevant engineering parameters. The proposed absorber design effectively lowers H₂S content to safe levels, ensuring biogas meets quality standards for combustion and electricity generation. This solution not only optimizes biogas purification but also supports the company’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible energy production.
