Abstract
This study explores the synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using essential oil extracted from citronella leaves (Cymbopogon nardus L.) as a green bioreducing agent. The synthesis was carried out using a sonochemical method, varying the pH levels (7, 8, 9, 10, 11) and sonication durations (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 minutes) to determine the optimal conditions for maximizing AgNPs yield. Utilizing essential oil as a bioreductor offers an environmentally friendly and efficient approach for reducing metal ions. The highest experimental yield of 8.68% was obtained at pH 9 and 60 minutes of sonication. Optimization using the Design Expert software predicted a maximum yield of 8.728% at pH 8.561 and 62.924 minutes of sonication. The formation of AgNPs was confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, showing a characteristic absorption peak at 450 nm with an absorbance value of 4.0. Particle size analysis (PSA) revealed an average particle size of 3420.96 nm, indicating potential applicability of the synthesized AgNPs as a catalyst.
