Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effects of using biodiesel fuels (B40 and B100) with the addition of n-butanol on thermal efficiency, flame characteristics, and exhaust gas emissions in a burner system. The experiment was conducted using varying fuel pressures at 12 bar, 14 bar, 16 bar, 18 bar, and 20 bar. The results show that the burner’s thermal efficiency increases with rising fuel pressure, with B100+n-butanol achieving the highest thermal efficiency of 36% at 20 bar. The highest average thermal efficiency was also recorded for B100+n-butanol at 25%, higher than B40 (21%) and B40+n-butanol (23%). Flame characteristics improved with the B100+n-butanol blend, producing an average flame length of 1124.2 mm and width of 255.4 mm, shorter and more focused than B40 which had a flame length of 1193.2 mm and width of 252.4 mm. Flame temperature with B100+n-butanol reached 1026°C at 20 bar, compared to 973°C for B40 at the same pressure. In addition, exhaust gas emissions decreased with the addition of n-butanol, with the lowest CO emission recorded at 11.2%Vol for B100+n-butanol, compared to 15%Vol for B40. Likewise, CO₂ emissions for B100+n-butanol were 13.6%Vol, lower than 17.2%Vol for B40. Overall, the addition of n-butanol to biodiesel improves combustion performance, enhances thermal efficiency, and reduces exhaust emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative for fossil fuel-based power generation systems
