Abstract

This research is motivated by the accumulation of organic solid waste originating from human domestic activities which is then utilized as an adsorbent. The adsorbent in this study used avocado seeds, durian skin, and teak sawdust activated with H3PO4 and KOH. The adsorbate used in this study was screen printing washing waste with parameters of total chromium (Cr), color, COD, and BOD. Before entering the adsorption column, the liquid waste went through coagulation-flocculation, and sedimentation processing first to maximize the adsorption process. The inlet sampling of the adsorption column came from the sedimentation outlet with time variations of 30, 60, and 90 minutes in the final storage tank. The purpose of the adsorbent variation is to determine the effect of media and charcoal activator on the surface area of the adsorbent and the effect of different surface areas of the adsorbent on its effectiveness in removing total chromium (Cr), color, COD, and BOD in screen printing washing waste. In the coagulation-flocculation and sedimentation processes, the best removal of all pollutants occurred at a sampling time of 90 minutes. In the adsorption process, the largest total chromium (Cr) removal was produced by avocado seed and durian skin adsorbents activated with KOH, the largest color removal was produced by teak sawdust adsorbents activated with H3PO4, and the largest COD and BOD removal was produced by teak sawdust adsorbents activated with H3PO4. Adsorbents activated using H3PO4 have a larger surface area compared to adsorbents activated using KOH. For its effectiveness, adsorbents with the largest surface area do not necessarily produce the largest percentage removal, because removal is also influenced by the structure and characteristics of the adsorbent and adsorbate themselves. Keywords: adsorbent, adsorption, BET, coagulation-flocculation. sedimentation. surface area
