Abstract

Jalan Raya Kertajaya Indah and Manyar Kertoarjo is one of the main roads located in the city of Surabaya. This corridor is filled with a variety of vehicles, ranging from small vehicles to large vehicles resulting in traffic congestion especially during peak hours. This road congestion undoubtedly contributes to significant air pollution, especially carbon dioxide gas. One greenhouse gas mitigation strategy is Offset, which is a strategy to absorb green house gass (GHG) concentrations so that GHG emissions can be reduced. An example of an offset strategy is maximizing green open space to absorb carbon dioxide emissions caused by human activities. This study aims to assess whether the carbon sequestration capacity of existing greenway vegetation is able to offset the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced, so that it can be the basis for environmental management planning on Jalan Raya Kertajaya Indah and Manyar Kertoarjo, Surabaya City. This study analyzed carbon sequestration in tree vegetation using non-destructive sampling method, by measuring tree diameter at breast height (DBH) and applying allometric equation. The results of carbon storage were compared with CO₂ emissions from motorized vehicles, which were calculated based on the IPCC (2006) method through traffic counting data and vehicle-specific emission factors. Based on the calculation of the amount of vehicle emissions from traffic counting results, it is known that the average generation of CO2 emissions from motorized vehicles is 334.12 kg CO₂ / hour. In the emission distribution model using the box model method, one elongated box is applied. The simulation results show that from point 1 to point 4 resulted in a concentration of 157.66 mg CO₂/m. Based on the analysis of the absorption capacity of the Surabaya City green belt, it is known that the green belt has a carbon absorption capacity of 4,912,329.60 Kg CO₂ per year or 153,018,039.38 mg / second. Keywords: green belt, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, carbon sequestration.
