Abstract

Portulaca oleracea L., commonly known as purslane, is a plant with significant potential as both a vegetable and a medicinal herb. Purslane offers numerous valuable benefits in terms of health, nutrition, and agricultural applications. However, not many people are aware of its potential, leading to suboptimal utilization. This study aims to evaluate the effects of different watering intervals and the best silica fertilizer application on the growth and production of purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.). The research was conducted at the Greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Pembangunan Nasional "Veteran" East Java, from July to September 2024. A factorial experiment was employed, designed using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), involving two main factors: watering intervals (A1: every 2 days, A2: every 4 days, and A3: every 6 days) and silica fertilizer doses (S1: no fertilizer, S2: 10 g/polybag, S3: 15 g/polybag, and S4: 20 g/polybag). Observed parameters included the number of leaves, number of branches, canopy diameter, fresh weight, dry weight and vitamin C content in purslane plants. The results showed that there was a significant interaction between the combination of irrigation intervals and silica fertilizer application on the number of leaves. However, there was no significant effect on the number of branches, canopy diameter, fresh weight, dry weight and vitamin C content of the plants. This study indicates that the proper combination of irrigation and silica fertilizer can enhance the production of Portulaca oleracea L., which could serve as an alternative to improve the cultivation of medicinal plants with better quality.
