Abstract

The mangrove ecosystem in Indonesia, which covers more than 3.36 million hectares, plays an important role in coastal protection and absorption carbon. However, industrial pollution, especially heavy metals such as lead (Pb), threatens its sustainability by disrupting nutrient cycles and marine habitats. This study investigates the potential of three mangrove species Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza in accumulating Pb in the mangrove forests of Wonorejo and Gunung Anyar in Surabaya. Using survey methods and purposive random sampling, sediment, root, and leaf samples were collected from both sites. Physiochemical analysis includes texture, pH, EC, and Pb concentration. The research results showed that the Pb concentration in the sediments of Mount Anyar reached 12.0 ppm, higher than Wonorejo at 4.05 ppm. Avicennia marina showed the highest Pb accumulation, with a Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) of 8.85 in roots and 6.97 in leaves. Rhizophora mucronata has BCF of 5.75 in roots and 2.09 in leaves, while Bruguiera gymnorrhiza has a high root BCF of 28.8 and leaf BCF of 28.4. Translocation Factor (TF) analysis revealed that Avicennia marina had the highest TF of 1.27 in the first week, decreasing to 0.82 in the second week, indicating phytostabilization. These findings indicate that Avicennia marina is more effective for phytostabilization in contaminated areas, while Rhizophora mucronata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza are more suitable for phytoextraction providing insights for species-based mangrove restoration strategies.
