Abstract

This research investigates the use of recycled glass and silica sand as media in slow sand filtration for treating laundry wastewater. The primary objective of this study is to compare the efficiency of both media and ripening time in removing Total Suspended Solids (TSS), turbidity, and phosphate from laundry wastewater. The selection of recycled glass as a filtration medium is due to its characteristics of having many angles, resulting in high porosity and low headloss. This is also an effort to reduce the exploitation of sand as a filtration medium. The results of the research show that the use of recycled glass is quite effective compared to silica sand in removing TSS and turbidity, with removal percentages for TSS (90.50% ± 3.50% vs 86.50% ± 3.50%) and turbidity (85.09 ± 5.47% vs 79.43% ± 6.60%). However, in phosphate removal, recycled glass is not as effective as silica sand with removal percentages (38.34% ± 8.39% vs 72.56% ± 10.93%). The addition of EM4 was done to assist in the growth of the schmutzdecke layer in this study.
