Abstract

The use of fuel in Indonesia can be said to be quite high. This is followed by the decreasing availability of petroleum reserves in Indonesia. One alternative solution in conserving fuel oil is by using bioadditives. Essential oils derived from plant materials will not produce negative impacts that can damage the environment. The process of processing essential oils from citronella using the water and steam distillation method. The process of making essential oils is by washing citronella, then drying it and cutting it into small pieces. After that, 1 kg of citronella is weighed with 3 liters of water, then distilled using the water and steam distillation method with an operating temperature of 100 ° C and a distillation time of 2 hours. The distillation results are then separated from water by oil using a separator. Citronella oil was tested using GC-MS, where citronella oil contained 19.35% geraniol, 1.24% citronellal, and 1.72% citronellol. Citronella oil is mixed with Pertalite fuel with a ratio of 2:1000; 4:1000; 6:1000; 8:1000; and 10:1000 and a stirring time of 1 minute; 2 minutes; 3 minutes; 4 minutes; and 5 minutes. Then the results of mixing citronella oil with Pertalite fuel are tested by analyzing density, viscosity, calorific value, and octane number. The best test results were at a mixture of 10:1000 and a stirring time of 5 minutes, with an increase in calorific value of 7.35% and an increase in octane number of 2.97%.
