Abstract

As Indonesia's population continues to grow, some people have taken advantage of this by opening laundry businesses. Laundry waste contains various substances, including Total Suspended Solids (TSS). Coagulation–flocculation is one process that can reduce TSS and turbidity parameters. This process, using stirring speeds of 100 rpm and 150 rpm, was tested with biocoagulants made from watermelon seeds, rain tree seeds, and the commercial coagulant aluminum sulfate for comparison. The next treatment stage was filtration, using rice husk charcoal, silica sand, and gravel. The treatment results were then followed by measuring the turbidity and TSS values. In this combination of coagulation–flocculation and filtration, the best treatment results for turbidity were achieved with the watermelon seed biocoagulant, achieving a turbidity removal rate of 77% with a result of 80 NTU. For TSS, the watermelon seed biocoagulant achieved an 80% removal rate, with a result of 48 mg/L. The highest removal rate in laundry wastewater treatment using the combined coagulation–flocculation and filtration method was achieved with a dosage of 75 ml/L and a stirring speed of 150 rpm. Keywords: watermelon seeds, trembesi seeds, rice husk charcoal.
