Abstract

The tofu industry generates wastewater from the coagulation of soy protein and molding processes which contains high organic content such as COD therefore treatment is required before discharging the wastewater into water bodies The high organic content can be utilized as a substrate in Microbial Fuel Cells MFCs a technology that generates electricity by harnessing organic materials in wastewater Additionally to optimize the treatment process an Anaerobic Baffled Reactor ABR is used to break down complex organic compounds into simpler forms enhancing the ability of microorganisms to digest the organic content in MFCs This study aims to analyze the effect of anode type in the MFCs ABR reactor combination on power density COD removal and pH conditions during the treatment process The research began with seeding and acclimatization followed by comparing the effects of different anode types graphite zinc and stainless steel on the performance of the MFCs ABR system at varying retention times of 24 48 72 and 96 hours The results showed that the graphite anode produced the highest power density of 20413 mW/m² and a COD removal efficiency of 6042% at a retention time of 96 hours. Keywords: Microbial Fuel Cells, Anaerobic Baffled Reactor, Electricity production, Anode type, COD removal, Tofu wastewater.
