Abstract
Synthetic chemical insecticides are widely used by farmers to control fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith) which attacks on maize plants. Excessive use of the chemical insecticides can have negative effects for envinronment and human health. Environmentally friendly controls need to be used with entomopathogenic fungi from Beauveria bassiana. The ability of B. bassiana fungi to infect on insect pests are influenced by type of target pest, spore density, time and frequency of the application. This research aims to determine the level of spore density and application time of B. bassiana fungi that effectively on mortality of S. frugiperda larvae on maize plants. The research used a factorial Completely Randomized Design (RCD) with first treatment was spore density of B. bassiana fungi (106, 107, 108, and 109 spore/ml), sterilized aquadest and deltametrin insecticides as controls. Second treatment was application time of fungi (morning and late afternoon). The results showed that application of B. bassiana in the late afternoon with density of 108 and 109 spore/ml caused S. frugiperda larvae mortality on maize plants of 60 % and 73,3 %. Application time of B. bassiana fungi in the late afternoon resulted higher mortality percentages than application in the morning. Environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and solar intensity at those time are considered suitable and supports of B. bassiana spores to germinate and grow in the S. frugiperda larvae’s body.
