Abstract

Salt is an important ingredient that is widely used for daily needs and in industrial. In Indonesia, salt production sources come from local salt which is still of low quality with a NaCl content around 84%. The low quality of salt is caused by the large amount of impurities such as MgCl2, MgSO4, CaSO4, and others. Based on this, research was carried out to improve the quality of local salt by using the recrystallization method accompanied by addition of the chemical reagent Na2CO3 and NaOH. The addition of these chemical reagents is used to bind impurities in local salt (Ca2+ and Mg2+) thereby increasing NaCl levels. This research was carried out using variations in the addition of excess concentrations of Na2CO3 and NaOH according to stoichiometric requirements, namely 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%. The salt was subjected to an AAS test to determine Ca2+ and Mg2+ levels as well as an argentometry titration test for NaCl levels. The best results were obtained by adding 0% Na2CO3 and 20% NaOH to produce salt with a NaCl content of 97.27%, a Ca2+ content of 0.038% and Mg2+ content of 0.0196%. The purity of this salt has reached the specifications of industrial salt.
