Abstract

Non-renewable energy in Indonesia is decreasing along with the increasing population and industrial sector. Alternative energy will always be used as a solution to reduce global warming and as a substitute for the dwindling non-renewable energy reserves. The type of alternative energy that can be used as a substitute for non-renewable energy is biomass. Researchers will focus on making biomass, namely making charcoal briquettes from candlenut shell waste and sawdust where both of these basic materials have very good potential to be used as basic materials for making charcoal briquettes. Candlenut shell waste and sengon sawdust are cleaned and then dried for 3 days under the hot sun. The carbonization process is carried out on the dried material. Carbonization is carried out at a temperature of 250oC for 3 hours. The carbonized charcoal is ground with a grinder and then sieved with a 60 mesh sieve. Candlenut shell charcoal and sengon sawdust charcoal are mixed in a ratio of 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5 and arpus adhesive 7 grams, 9 grams, 11 grams, 13 grams, and 15 grams. Arpus adhesive is dissolved using 96% ethanol in a ratio of 4:1. After mixing the sample with the adhesive, molding is carried out and then the briquettes are dried using an oven for 60 minutes at a temperature of 100 oC. Charcoal briquettes will be tested for water content, ash content, volatile matter content, and calorific value. Based on the results of the charcoal briquette study, the highest fixed carbon value was obtained from the composition of candlenut shell charcoal and sawdust 9:1 with an arpus adhesive concentration of 15 grams with a fixed carbon value of 73.77%. From the fixed carbon value, charcoal briquettes have met the quality standards according to SNI No.1/6235/2000. Based on the results of the charcoal briquette research, the highest calorific value was obtained from the composition of candlenut shell charcoal and sawdust 9:1 with 15 grams of arpus adhesive, resulting in a calorific value of 5375.25 cal/g.
