Abstract

Indonesia is increasing development in all industrial fields, especially the chemical industry. Economic strength will increase if it is able to produce most of the main necessities itself, especially industrial products. Ethyl alcohol or often called ethanol is a chemical that is very important for the chemical industry in Indonesia. The establishment of an ethanol factory needs to be considered because it is widely used as a raw material in the acetic acid industry and is also used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics industry and as a raw material for making other compounds. Because of this broad use, the establishment of an ethanol factory will spur the establishment of other industries. Ethanol consumption in Indonesia itself has a tendency to increase. As an illustration, ethanol consumption is increasing, it can be seen from the supply which comes from domestic production plus imports and minus exports. On the basis that in a particular year all of it is consumed that year, it is estimated that the growth rate of ethanol consumption in Indonesia tends to increase every year. This ethanol plant uses a direct hydration process with a phosphoric acid catalyst using pretreatment first by increasing the pressure with an ethylene compressor to 60 atm. Then it flows into the furnace to increase the temperature to 300℃. Then it flows into a multitube fixed bed type reactor with operation at 300℃ with a catalyst in the tube. In this reactor there is a direct hydration process with water (H20) resulting in an ethanol product. After it comes out of the reactor it is separated using a flash drum and scrubber to separate based on the heavy fraction and impurities. Then it is separated in distillation 1 with an operating pressure of 1 atm to separate diethyl ether as a by-product and distillation 2 with a pressure of 1 atm to separate ethanol and water. After that the product is stored in a tank with a pressure of 1 atm and a room temperature of 25 ℃.Based on the review and discussion above, the establishment of an ethanol factory in Cilegon is technically and economically feasible. The details of the pre-plan for the ethanol factory are as follows: a. Capacity: 40,000 tons/year b. Company Form: Limited Liability Company c. Organizational System: Line and Staff d. Number of Employees: 182 People e. Operating System: Continuous f. Operating Time: 330 days/year; 24 hours/day g. Total Investment: IDR 213,762,256,607 h.Pay Back Period: 1 year 8 months i.Bank Interest: 10% j. Rate on Investment : 27.50 % k. Break Even Point (BEP): 35.43
