Abstract

A Monochloroacetic Acid Factory based on Acetic Acid, Chlorine and Red Phosphor Catalyst with a Chlorination Process with a capacity of 55,000 Tons/year is planned to be established in the Cilegon Industrial Estate Area, Cilegon City, Banten. This Monochloroacetic Acid Factory uses a continuous operation system 24 hours a day with 330 working days and 201 employees. This factory uses Acetic Acid as raw material obtained from PT. Indo Acidatama. Chlorine obtained from PT. Asahimas Chemical, Red Phosphor Catalyst obtained from Victory Join Stock Comp. The products produced are Monochloroacetic Acid with a purity level of 98% and Hydrochloric Acid with a purity level of 32%. Monochloroacetic Acid is widely used in the industrial sector, including for the manufacture of carboxymethyl cellulose and the herbicide industry. The use of Monochloroacetic Acid is very broad so the establishment of this factory is very necessary to reduce imports from abroad. The production process used in this Monochloroacetic Acid factory uses a chlorination process. Materials needed in the acid chlorination process are acetic acid, chlorine and red phosphorus as a catalyst. The raw material for the acetic acid solution has a purity of 99.2% and is stored in a storage tank at a temperature of 30°C at a pressure of 1 atm, while the chlorine with a purity of 99.7% in liquid form is reduced in pressure to change the chlorine phase from liquid to gas. The acetic acid solution and chlorine gas flow into the heater to condition the temperature before entering in the reactor. The solution of Acetic Acid and Chlorine Gas is reacted at a pressure of 1 atm and a temperature of 100 °C to produce the products Monochloroacetic Acid and Hydrochloric Acid gas. The top product in the form of hydrochloric acid gas which is still mixed with chlorine gas is separated using an absorption process. The product from the Absorber produces the top product in the form of chlorine gas while the bottom product is a hydrochloric acid solution as a side product which will be stored in a storage tank. The Monochloroacetic Acid formed as a result of the reaction is then flowed to a cooler and then to a crystallizer to obtain Monochloroacetic Acid Crystals. The wet crystals will be fed to the rotary dryer for drying. Monochloroacetic acid is then cooled using a cooling conveyor. Monochloroacetic Acid crystals are stored in a silo as the final product
