Abstract

This study explores social issues surrounding gender equality raised in the Kretek Girl series, which is adapted from the novel by Ratih Kumala. This research aims to explore the relationship between the phenomena of misogyny, sexism, and sexual objectification presented in the series. The research method used is qualitative with John Fiske's semiotic approach, which applies the theory of "Television Codes" at three levels: reality, representation, and ideology. Researchers analyzed the 12 scenes that were the focus of the study to explore how sexism and misogyny are portrayed towards women. The results of the analysis show a correlation between the real social context and Gail Ukockis' theory with the misogyny and sexism explained in the context of the Kretek Girl series. These findings include representations of treating women as tools, denying autonomy, reducing roles, placing gender as replaceable objects, ownership, and denying subjectivity.
