Abstract
Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is an alternative fuel that comes from waste. Utilization of RDF is considered to be able to reduce carbon dioxide gas emissions and reduce land loss due to landfills. In this research, refuse-derived fuel (RDF) was combined with coal and biomass to see the effect of using RDF towards emissions in cement plant and the environmental impact caused. From the results known from production data from August to September 2022, the RDF specifications used as an alternative fuel have a heating value of 4177 Kcal/kg, an ash content percentage of 12,39% and a moisture content of 22,63%. Emission data from the Kiln-Raw Mill chimney taken in April 2022 shows that the parameters for Particulates, SO2, NOx, HF, HCl, and CO are 16 mg/Nm3 , 36 mg/Nm3 , 178 mg/Nm3 , 0.4 mg/Nm3 , 14 mg/Nm3 , and 16 mg/Nm3 are known to be still below the applicable quality standards. Meanwhile, the average ambient measurement results in the fourth trimester of 2022 for 10 locations around the cement plant for dust particulate parameters (TSP), PM10, PM25, SO2, NO2, CO, O3, HC and Pb are 75 mg/Nm3 , 30 mg/Nm3 , 16 mg/Nm3 , 31.5 mg/Nm3 , 25.5 mg/Nm3 , 1164 mg/Nm3 , 34 mg/Nm3 , <66 mg/Nm3 , <0.002 mg/Nm3 which is also known to be below standard applicable quality. The results show that all parameters are below the applicable quality standard thresholds. This research uses Response Surface Methodology with Box Behnken design for the analysis. The emission parameters tested were particulates, SO2, NOx, HF, HCl, and CO. Based on variance analysis and three-dimensional response surface maps of emissions from the cement plant, it shows optimal conditions in the percentage of biomass 11%, RDF 10%, and coal 76%. The interaction between each variable shows that adding RDF up to 10% does not affect the amount of flue gas emissions produced. So utilization of RDF is considered not to harm the environment if used as a fuel mixture. Keywords: waste management, refuse-derived fuel, gas emissions, cement industry
