Abstract

The need for proper sanitation is increasing every day along with population growth. Sanitary wastewater or domestic wastewater is wastewater from the use of every activity of human life, which is divided into gray water and black water. Fecal sludge, which is included in the black water category, is a source of pollution consisting of dissolved solids with high organic material content and microorganisms. The initial treatment of fecal sludge is carried out in domestic septic tanks that have certain capacity limitations, so further fecal sludge treatment is needed, which is carried out at the STP. IPLT Griyo Mulyo (Jabon) Sidoarjo Regency began operating in 2015 with a processing discharge capacity of 34.6 m3/day, and the average daily processing discharge in 2023 is 25 m3/day. As the years go by, the decline in the performance of the IPLT processing unit is inevitable. It is known that some test parameters of treatment results cannot meet the quality standards of Minister of Environment and Forestry Number 68 of 2016 concerning Domestic Wastewater Quality Standards. This study uses the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) method, which aims to identify the source and risk of processing unit failure that can cause a decrease in the quality of processing results. Field observations, interviews, and laboratory testing are carried out to determine the value of severity, occurrence, and detection which are then calculated to determine the value of the Risk Priority Number (RPN). From the results of the study, it was found that the causes of failure with the largest RPN values were detention time (dt) of collection ponds (RPN 30), Removal of COD and TSS of anaerobic ponds (RPN 30), Removal of BOD and COD of facultative ponds (RPN 30), Removal of COD and TSS of maturation ponds (RPN 24), and Removal of TSS of facultative ponds (RPN 15). Improvement proposals can be used as suggestions for fecal sludge treatment to improve service quality.
