Abstract
The fulfillment of industrial salt needs in Indonesia is still supported by imports from other countries. This is because locally produced salt in Indonesia does not meet the standards required by the industry. According to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), industrial salt must have a minimum NaCl content of 97%. Meanwhile, local salt produced by the local population has an NaCl content of 90.10% with Ca2+ impurities amounting to 0.22%. In this study, the purification of local salt to become industrial salt was carried out by adding Na2CO3 with excess concentration variables of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The addition of Na2CO3 aims to bind the Ca2+ impurities contained in local salt. Before adding Na2CO3, the local salt undergoes a washing process through batch hydroextraction with extraction time variables of 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 minutes using brine solution. The purpose of batch hydroextraction washing of local salt is to remove impurities present on the surface of the local salt crystals. The objective of this study is to convert local salt into industrial salt. The results of this study show that the highest salt content obtained was 99.08% with Ca2+ impurities amounting to 0.0001%.
