Abstract

Haiti is a country with potential in the manufacturing industry in the Caribbean region of North America. However, the country has experienced political crises such as corruption and a power vacuum as well as natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes since 1964. This in turn has impacted the survival of the Haitian people due to lack of access to urgent humanitarian needs such as water and sanitation services. A series of crises, natural disasters, and the impact of these two events have resulted in Haiti becoming a fragile state with a high level of humanitarian crisis and insecurity risk. The condition of Haiti then encouraged countries to assist, one of which was the United States. The United States provided its assistance through the USAID Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) program implemented in 2017-2023 using the Triple Nexus Approach. This research aims to describe the use of the Triple Nexus Approach through efforts in the WATSAN program and explain its relationship and contribution to the survival of the Haitian people. The theory used by the author is the Triple Nexus Approach. This research uses an explanatory method and secondary data sources in the form of quarterly reports for 2018-2023, final reports, and final performance reports of USAID Water and Sanitation. In its implementation, the Triple Nexus Approach is used through the humanitarian-development nexus, humanitarian-peace nexus, and development peace nexus which are manifested in the components contained in the WATSAN program to mitigate the impact of political crises and natural disasters in Haiti.
