Abstract

Corn is one of the staple crops experiencing a continuous annual increase in production. Corn waste, especially corn cobs, is a valuable resource for activated carbon production. Activated carbon, a material with a large surface area, has the ability to absorb various substances, including pollutants, heavy metals, and chemicals. One innovative approach to activated carbon production involves the use of corn cobs and belimbing wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi) as activators. Belimbing wuluh, a natural and eco-friendly material, has been proven to be more effective in activating carbon compared to chemical activators. The produced activated carbon is characterized according to SNI 06-3730-1995, which includes the determination of iodine adsorption capacity, water content, ash content, volatile matter, and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) analysis. Research findings reveal that the generated activated carbon exhibits a high iodine adsorption capacity of 867.198 mg/g, water content of 6.76%, ash content of 1.194%, volatile matter of 17.021%, and a uniform pore structure.
