Abstract

PT. PAL Indonesia is the largest shipbuilding company in Indonesia. PT. PAL Indonesia strives to provide the best for consumers, precisely in terms of the quality of the BRS W-303 shipbuilding. The purpose of this research is to determine the percentage of the most dominant defects and the factors that cause defects and to provide suggestions for improving welding quality. The methods used are Statistical Quality Control (SQC) and Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA). Based on the results of research on Statistical Quality Control (SQC) it is known that the most dominant ship welding defects are Incomplete Penetration (2,9%), then Incomplete Fusion (2,2%), Slag Inclusion (2%), and Porosity (1,6%). Based on the results of research on Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) it is known that the root cause of the highest problem with RPN 288 is the determination of the root gap is too small/narrow. Recommendations for improvement that can be proposed are to emphasize to the welder that he must read and understand the WPS used to weld correctly.
