Abstract

The effectiveness of Spodoptera litura Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (SlNPV) as a biological control agent can decrease following exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Therefore, a natural protective material is needed to maintain virus stability and effectiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Avicennia marina leaf extract as a natural UV protectant for SlNPV and to determine its effects on Polyhedral Inclusion Body (PIB) count, feeding inhibition, mortality, and lethal time of Spodoptera litura. The study was conducted in vitro using a Completely Randomized Design consisting of five treatments: SlNPV without extract and SlNPV supplemented with 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% A. marina leaf extract, with five replications. Third-instar S. litura larvae were used as test insects, and treated feed was exposed to UV radiation before application. The results showed that the 20% extract treatment maintained the highest PIB count after UV exposure, reaching 1.2 × 10⁹ PIBs/mL, compared with 6.0 × 10⁸ PIBs/mL in the control. The highest Feed Deterrent Index (FDI) was 37.42%, while mortality reached 92%. The lowest LT50 was 177.640 hours in the 10% treatment, followed by 177.673 hours in the 20% treatment. These findings indicate that A. marina leaf extract has potential as a natural UV protectant to support the effectiveness of SlNPV against S. litura.
