Abstract
This report presents the results of the Field Work Practice at Production Department II B, PT. Petrokimia Gresik, focusing on the evaluation of the dedusting system (Cyclone 18D-2115) in the NPK Granulation Unit. The fertilizer granulation process generates dust that must be controlled to maintain plant operational efficiency and workplace environmental safety. In this system, Cyclone 18D-2115 functions as a primary separator, utilizing centrifugal force to separate coarse dust particles from the gas stream before entering the scrubber unit. This special assignment aims to evaluate the operational capacity and dust separation efficiency of the cyclone unit through two methods: theoretical calculation using Lapple's method and numerical modeling via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using ANSYS Fluent 2022 software. Based on theoretical analysis, the cyclone operates at an optimal inlet gas velocity of 13.98 m/s, yielding a cut particle diameter (d_pc) of 11.1 µm, with an estimated theoretical collection efficiency of 83.8%. Furthermore, CFD simulation using the Discrete Phase Model (DPM) and the SST k-ω turbulence model demonstrates the formation of a stable double-vortex flow within the cyclone. This modeling recorded an excellent dust collection efficiency of 94.47%, in which the unit successfully captured 6,838 coarse particles out of a total of 7,238 injected particles. Additionally, the maximum pressure drop generated was 1,132.20 Pa, proving that the cyclone operates effectively without imposing an energy penalty that overburdens the blower motor performance. This evaluation concludes that Cyclone 18D-2115 performs optimally in separating coarse particulates, significantly alleviating the air scrubbing workload in the downstream scrubber room while supporting a zero-waste production system by recycling dust material back into the granulation process.
