Abstract

The development of digital financial technology has expanded public access to various investment products, including foreign exchange (forex) trading. This study aims to analyze the influence of financial literacy and the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) on forex overtrading behavior among Generation Z investors in Surabaya. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing a survey of 97 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The respondents were aged 17–29, held active trading accounts, conducted independent retail forex transactions, and followed trading information via digital media. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using PLS-SEM via SmartPLS. The results indicate that financial literacy has a significant negative effect on overtrading, with a path coefficient of -0.108, a T-statistic of 1.984, and a P-value of 0.048. FOMO has a significant positive effect, with a path coefficient of 0.791, a T-statistic of 11.497, and a P-value of 0.000. The R-Square value of 0.753 indicates that these two variables explain 75.3% of the variation in overtrading. FOMO emerged as the most dominant factor, whereas financial literacy played a role in mitigating the tendency toward excessive trading. Keywords: Financial Literacy, Fear of Missing Out, Overtrading, Forex, Generation
