Abstract

The development of viral content on TikTok has created challenges in determining the authenticity of digital content, particularly when social and emotional narratives are presented through content that may also involve commercial interests. This study aims to analyze Generation Z's reception of authenticity in the TikTok content “beliin mobil untuk wali kelas”. This research employed a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm and reception analysis based on Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, digital observation, and documentation involving nine Generation Z informants who actively use TikTok and were familiar with the research object. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, followed by categorization into dominant, negotiated, and oppositional reading positions. The findings show that Generation Z assesses authenticity through considerations of sincerity, naturalness, plausibility, conformity with everyday reality, concrete evidence, and potential commercial interests in content construction. The reception of authenticity varies among informants. One informant was categorized as dominant reading, six as negotiated reading, and two as oppositional reading. The dominance of negotiated reading indicates that most informants neither fully accepted nor rejected the authenticity represented in the content, but negotiated its meaning based on their experiences and interpretations. The study concludes that authenticity in viral TikTok content is not perceived as an absolute characteristic of content but is constructed through the active interpretation of audiences.
