Abstract

Film as a form of mass communication not only serves as entertainment but also represents various behaviors and social realities in society. One behavior portrayed in Tinggal Meninggal is attention seeking through the character Gema. This study aims to understand the reception of Generation Z individuals with broken home backgrounds toward attention-seeking behavior in Tinggal Meninggal on Netflix. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm and Stuart Hall’s Encoding-Decoding theory as the framework for reception analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with seven Generation Z informants with broken home backgrounds who had watched the film in its entirety. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Stuart Hall’s theory was used to identify three reception positions: Dominant Hegemonic, Negotiated, and Oppositional. The findings show that the informants did not occupy a single fixed decoding position, as their interpretations varied depending on the scenes and messages being interpreted. The DominantHegemonic position was commonly found when informants understood Gema’s need for attention based on her lack of attention during childhood. The Negotiated position was the most frequently found, as informants understood Gema’s reasons for seeking attention but did not justify her use of lies. Meanwhile, the Oppositional position was consistently demonstrated by one informant who rejected the idea that a broken home background justified Gema’s actions. The study concludes that broken home backgrounds do not automatically produce the same interpretation, as reception is shaped by individual experiences and perspectives. Keywords: attention seeking, broken home, film, Generation Z, reception analysis
