Abstract

The preliminary design of a Formaldehyde Plant from Methanol and Air using the Silver Catalyst Process was conducted to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of establishing a formaldehyde production facility. The plant is designed with a production capacity of 90,000 tons/year and will be located in Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE), Manyar Sidomukti Village, Gresik Regency, East Java. The main raw materials used are methanol supplied from PT Brunei Methanol Company and air from the surrounding environment, with silver (Ag) as the catalyst. The required methanol and air feed rates are 4,954.54 kg/hour and 3,303.0244 kg/hour, respectively. The production process involves methanol oxidation and dehydrogenation using a silver catalyst. The process consists of raw material preparation, methanol evaporation, reaction in a catalyst reactor, absorption, and purification to obtain liquid formaldehyde as the main product. The plant operates for 330 days/year and 24 hours/day with 189 employees. The utility requirements include water consumption of 1,292.5 m³/day, steam demand of 2,542.542 lb/hour, electricity demand of 172.7538 kWh, and generator capacity of 6,219.1380 kWh. Economic feasibility analysis was performed using the Discounted Cash Flow method. The results showed a Fixed Capital Investment (FCI) of Rp579,504,489,817, Total Capital Investment (TCI) of Rp923,026,981,047, and Total Production Cost (TPC) of Rp1,374,089,904,920. The economic evaluation obtained a Pay Back Period (PBP) of 3 years and 11 months, Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 14.79%, and Break Even Point (BEP) of 31.3376%. Based on these results, the Formaldehyde Plant from Methanol and Air using the Silver Catalyst Process is considered feasible for further development.
