Abstract
A Monobasic Potassium Phosphate (MKP) plant with a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year is planned to be established in Cilegon, Banten. The plant will operate continuously for 24 hours per day and 330 days per year. The main raw materials used are potassium hydroxide (KOH) supplied by PT Nami Hito Chemicals and phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) supplied by PT Gael Vada Indonesia. Monobasic potassium phosphate (KH₂PO₄) is widely used in various industries. In agriculture, MKP is utilized as a fertilizer containing high levels of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) without nitrogen (N), making it suitable for improving crop quality and yield. In the food industry, MKP is used as a food additive to improve water-binding capacity, maintain product quality, and extend the shelf life of processed food products. It is also used in the healthcare sector as a concentrated injection for intravenous infusion to treat phosphate and potassium deficiencies and as an electrolyte source. The production of MKP in this plant employs a neutralization process between potassium hydroxide and phosphoric acid. Potassium hydroxide with a purity of 90.80% is first dissolved in process water to obtain a 40% KOH solution, while 85% phosphoric acid is heated to 90°C. The two reactants are then fed into a reactor and reacted at 90°C and 1 atm for 30 minutes, achieving a reaction conversion of 99.8% and producing monobasic potassium phosphate and water. The resulting product slurry is subsequently cooled to 55°C in a homogenizer equipped with a cooling jacket. The homogenization process ensures uniform mixing and reduces the size of the initially formed solid particles through the action of a rotor and stator. The resulting slurry is then dried using hot air to evaporate the water and obtain MKP in powder form. The hot powder is subsequently cooled in a rotary cooler to 35°C. Finally, the product undergoes particle size classification to obtain a uniform particle size of 200 mesh, ensuring that the final MKP product meets the required specifications
