Abstract

The growing demand for methyl mercaptan used as a raw material for methionine, pesticides, and various other chemical products has created a need to establish a methyl mercaptan plant in Indonesia to meet domestic requirements and reduce import dependency. Currently, the demand for methyl mercaptan is met entirely through imports, as there are no domestic facilities producing it on a commercial scale. This preliminary design outlines a methyl mercaptan plant with a capacity of 65,000 tons per year, utilizing the Continuous Synthesis Gas Process. The production process comprises several key stages: the preparation of syngas and H₂S raw materials a synthesis reaction within a multitube fixed-bed reactor at approximately 280°C and subsequent cooling, condensation, and separation steps to obtain the CH₃SH product. CO₂ and H₂S gases are separated using a scrubber with a Monoethanolamine (MEA) solution, while the stripping gas and unreacted syngas are recycled back to the reactor. The CH₃SH product undergoes further purification involving flash separation, decantation, and additional separation stages before being routed to storage tanks. The preliminary design indicates that the methyl mercaptan synthesis process is viable for implementation, as it employs commercially proven technology and benefits from the availability of syngas and H₂S raw materials, as well as a strategic plant location in Bontang, East Kalimantan Province. Economic analysis suggests that the plant is a promising project, offering an adequate profit margin and a relatively short payback period.
